HARARE – Government has read the riot act on corrupt Vehicle Inspection Department officials and driving schools involved in corruption. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona convened an urgent meeting with officials from the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID), and driving schools this Wednesday following reports of corruption in the issuance of drivers’ licences.
All driving schools working in cahoots with VID officials to facilitate bribes in the issuance of driver’s licences will be deregistered.
“Government has zero tolerance to corruption. We have received reports that VID officials are working with driving schools in corrupt tendencies. We will deregister all driving schools involved in this,” Hon. Mhona noted.
Minister Mhona also held a meeting with tour operator associations from the country’s 10 provinces, with deliberations centred on regularisation and harmonisation of their operations.
“We need to synchronise operations and come up with a model of law to regularise your operations in line with the Road Motor Transport Act.”
Most transport operators with conventional buses and commuter omnibuses are currently operating under the ZUPCO franchise.
