HARARE – Several residential associations have condemned the recent recall of councillors by the Douglas Mwonzora and Thokozani Khuphe cabal as a threat to representative democracy.
Thokozani Khuphe, Douglas Mwonzora and their disgruntled company have embarked on a massive recall exercise of MDC Alliance councillors.
This follows a court judgement that gave Khuphe leadership of the MDC T which she has used to recall legislators who have expressed allegiance to MDC Alliance and its leadership of Nelson Chamisa.
They have also been on a massive drive of arbitrarily recalling MP’s.
It was recently also revealed that Khuphe, who dismally lost the Presidential election in 2018 is part of the names submitted for replacing the recalled legislators.
“The rampant recall of councillors of elected councillors is a direct attack on representative democracy and seeks to throw away residents to the periphery of local governance which has severe implications on both service delivery and answerability of officials to the electorate. Political parties must not act supreme over the voter, residents are the number one stakeholder in ever political process and should be treated with respect, ” read part of the statement.
The Associations further demanded that the recall crusade be ceased and broader consultations be made with the residents and also energy be refocused on improving service delivery to residents.
