MANICALAND – Zimbabwe is taking decisive action to address the significant gender disparity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, empowering young girls to pursue their passions and fostering a more inclusive society.

Hon. Dr. Torerayi Moyo, Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, speaking during the International Girls in ICT Day commemorations in Mutare, emphasised the importance of equal opportunities for girls in ICT education, saying, “By encouraging and supporting girls to pursue studies and careers in ICT, we are unlocking their potential and creating a more inclusive society.”

To challenge stereotypes and biases, the Ministry aims to promote positive role models, expose girls to real-world applications of ICTs through internships, scholarships, and industry partnerships, and break down barriers that discourage girls from pursuing male-dominated careers.

‘We must challenge the stereotypes and biases that discourage girls from entering the ICT field. We need to create an environment where girls feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to pursue their passions. It is essential to promote positive role models, women who have excelled in the field of ICT to inspire and motivate our young girls as the country needs more,’ he added.

The Ministry has established ICT labs in schools across Zimbabwe, with a vision to connect all schools and ensure no one is left behind.

Minister Moyo emphasized, “Let us challenge the notion that certain fields are reserved for specific genders and promote an inclusive environment that values diversity and encourages collaboration.”

This bold initiative aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM, empowering young girls to shape the future of Zimbabwe and promoting a more equitable society.
